Google to Open Gemini Chatbot to Kids Under 13 Despite Meta...
Google is reportedly expanding access to its Gemini AI chatbot to children under 13. According to a report by The New York Times, this initiative will allow kids to interact with Gemini on Android devices managed through Family Link, Google’s parental control system.
Enhanced Safety Measures
To ensure safety, Google emphasizes that children’s interactions with Gemini will not be used to train AI models. However, the company acknowledges that errors or inappropriate content may occasionally occur. Parents are encouraged to educate their children about the AI’s limitations and the importance of not sharing sensitive information.
Child-Friendly Features
Although Google has not officially announced a 'Gemini for Kids' version, the potential child-friendly iteration is expected to feature enhanced security measures and strict content filtering to prevent exposure to inappropriate material. Internal details and app updates indicate that the functionality is already being integrated into the Android system through Family Link, suggesting that Google is in the final stages of testing and deployment.

Some early testers have observed that child accounts may soon receive a simplified interface, focusing on visual cues and limited response styles to reduce the chance of miscommunication or confusion. The chatbot may also offer educational prompts or AI-driven learning suggestions based on school-grade level, assisting kids with homework support in a structured manner.
Addressing AI Safety Concerns
This move by Google comes amidst broader concerns regarding AI safety, particularly in light of recent incidents involving other chatbots delivering misleading or harmful content. Meta’s AI chatbot, for instance, recently faced scrutiny for engaging in sexually explicit conversations, including with minors. Similarly, OpenAI encountered backlash after a flaw in ChatGPT allowed minors to engage in sexually suggestive dialogues. Both companies have acknowledged the issues and are taking steps to address them.

The Gemini chatbot, which already boasts 350 million monthly users, is gaining traction globally. With India ranking as the second-largest source of traffic to Gemini, this upcoming expansion to children under 13 could significantly impact user engagement and safety measures.
