Google's Gemini Update Enables Users to Ask Questions About...
In a recent update to the Files by Google app, Gemini, Google's advanced AI assistant, now has the capability to recognize when a PDF is open on your screen. This update allows users to directly query the contents of the PDF they are viewing. The Verge reports that this new feature is part of a broader rollout of context-aware capabilities in Gemini, aimed at improving user interactions with their digital files.

The functionality is currently being rolled out to Gemini Advanced subscribers. When users are viewing a PDF within the Files by Google app, they can now summon Gemini and utilize a new button labeled "Ask about this PDF." This feature allows users to ask specific questions about the content of the PDF, similar to interacting with a conversational AI like ChatGPT.
Enhanced User Experience
This new feature significantly enhances the way users engage with their files. For example, users can open a PDF, whether it's a research paper, eBook, or report, and ask Gemini questions like "What's the summary of this document?" or "Can you explain this section?" The assistant will then provide a detailed summary or clarifications, acting as a personal assistant to interpret the file.
Google initially previewed this functionality during its I/O developer conference in May 2024, and it is now being made available to Gemini Advanced subscribers. Although currently limited to this group, the feature is expected to reach a wider audience in the future.
Expanding Context-Aware Capabilities
The PDF recognition feature is part of Google's initiative to make Gemini more context-aware across various media types. While previously users could ask questions about web pages and YouTube videos, the ability to interpret on-screen content now opens up new possibilities for mobile users.
For applications or files that do not currently support Gemini's context-aware features, the assistant can still be of assistance by capturing a screenshot of the screen and offering answers based on it. This means that users can tap on "Ask about this screen" while reading an article in a web browser or watching a YouTube video to have Gemini analyze the content and provide relevant information.
