Shapiro details findings of AI pilot program, announces Phase two ...
Gov. Josh Shapiro has announced the findings of a groundbreaking pilot program in Pennsylvania that saw the state partner with OpenAI, making it the first state in the nation to do so.
Speaking in Pittsburgh, Shapiro emphasized the significance of Gen AI, stating, "It is one of the most significant technological developments of our time, likely leading to a new era akin to the agricultural and industrial revolutions of the past."
During the pilot program, 175 Commonwealth employees from 14 different agencies utilized OpenAI's ChatGPT. Despite nearly half of them being new to the tool, 85% reported positive experiences leveraging it for their job responsibilities.

Benefits of the AI Pilot Program
Employees who participated in the program were able to save an average of 95 minutes per day, equating to almost 8 hours per week or 30 hours per month. Additionally, the AI program streamlined job descriptions, accelerating hiring processes and reducing onboarding time from 90 to 60 days.
Phase Two Expansion
With the success of the pilot program, Shapiro announced "Phase Two," set to commence on June 1. The expansion aims to provide more Commonwealth employees with generative AI tools to enhance productivity and service delivery.

Shapiro made it clear that AI is not a replacement for human expertise but a valuable job enhancer. He stressed the importance of respecting public servants and highlighted the Commonwealth's commitment to working collaboratively with employees to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Joining forces with elected officials, unions, tech experts, and academia, Shapiro expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities that AI presents in serving the people of Pennsylvania.

As Pennsylvania continues to lead the way in AI integration, Shapiro reiterated the state's dedication to leveraging technology to better meet the needs of its residents.
