India fuels ChatGPT's AI surge as users create over 700 million images
ChatGPT recently introduced native image generation capabilities, triggering a surge in user engagement. A Studio Ghibli-style image trend has captivated the internet community since the launch of this new feature. OpenAI COO, Brad Lightcap, shared remarkable insights into the adoption of ChatGPT's image creation tool.
India Emerges as a Key Player
In a recent announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Lightcap disclosed that more than 130 million ChatGPT users worldwide have collectively generated over 700 million images in just a week. He also emphasized India's rapid adoption of ChatGPT, highlighting it as the fastest-growing market for the platform.

CEO Sam Altman also commended India's enthusiastic embrace of AI technology, stating, "What's happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity--India is outpacing the world."
Enhanced Image Generation Capabilities
Prior to this update, ChatGPT had access to image generation features through OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model. However, the recent enhancement in GPT-4o, the underlying language model powering ChatGPT, unlocked faster and more efficient image generation directly within the chatbot.

This advancement granted ChatGPT greater autonomy over image creation, enabling it to produce a diverse range of visuals with improved speed and consistency. From creating presentations and infographics to generating photorealistic images, ChatGPT's new capabilities garnered significant attention for its ability to replicate Studio Ghibli's distinct visual style.
Challenges Faced by OpenAI
Following the rollout of ChatGPT's enhanced image generation tool, the platform experienced two notable service disruptions, likely due to the influx of new users. The surge in demand also strained the OpenAI team, leading to sleepless nights as they worked tirelessly to ensure smooth operations.

OpenAI acknowledged a shortage of GPUs, attributing it to the overwhelming demand for ChatGPT's latest feature. Despite efforts to address capacity challenges, delays in new releases and occasional service slowdowns were anticipated as the team focused on stabilizing the platform.
