Meta makes its AI model available for military use | The Daily Star
Meta has announced that it will make its open-source AI model, Llama, available to US government agencies and contractors working on national security tasks. This move expands the applications of Llama beyond researchers and private businesses to defense and security work, including the US military.
Through partnerships with private companies like Lockheed Martin, Oracle, Scale AI, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and IBM, Meta will be supporting government projects with specific uses for Llama. For example, Oracle is integrating Llama to enhance aircraft maintenance, allowing technicians to diagnose issues faster and more accurately. Scale AI is also utilizing Llama to aid national security teams in areas such as planning and vulnerability analysis.
Addressing Public Needs
Aside from defense applications, Meta and its partners are also working on projects that cater to broader public needs. According to an official statement by Meta, the tech giant is collaborating with the US State Department on solutions to enhance public services and support small business initiatives.
Meta views open-source AI as a means to improve the efficiency and adaptability of national security work. Governments can customize these models for various missions, making them more effective in addressing evolving threats and challenges.
