Mark Zuckerberg wants Meta to spend $65 billion on AI this year

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is making a significant investment in artificial intelligence (AI) this year. In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg announced that Meta plans to invest between $60 billion and $65 billion in capital expenditures on AI in 2025.

Zuckerberg envisions Meta AI becoming the leading assistant serving over 1 billion people this year. He highlighted the Llama 4 model, which is expected to be the leading state-of-the-art model, and mentioned plans to develop an AI engineer to contribute more code to research and development efforts.

Building Infrastructure for AI

To support its AI initiatives, Meta is constructing a data center with a capacity of more than two gigawatts, which could cover a large part of Manhattan. Zuckerberg mentioned, "We’ll bring online ~1GW of compute in ‘25 and we’ll end the year with more than 1.3 million GPUs.”

The company is planning to expand its AI teams significantly and has the financial resources to continue investing in the coming years.

Operational Changes at Meta

Recently, Meta announced plans to reduce its workforce by 5%, equating to about 3,600 jobs. The cuts are targeted at low-performing employees, who will be replaced throughout the year based on performance evaluations.

Zuckerberg has also implemented new company policies, including reducing moderation and discontinuing the platform’s fact-checking system. Additionally, he has been reported to have developed a closer relationship with the Trump administration.
