Dr Wm. Matthew Kennedy - OII
Dr. Wm. Matthew (Matt) Kennedy is a dedicated Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow with a focus on AI ethics, sociotechnical safety, and political economy. His research is centered around three main themes:
- AI evaluation and red-teaming methodologies
- AI and knowledge production (with a special interest in AI in education, epistemic harms, and interdisciplinarity in AI)
- Decolonial AI
Affiliations
Dr. Kennedy is affiliated with several prestigious institutions and organizations, including: University of Sydney Centre for AI, Trust, and Governance, Machine Learning & Society team at Women at the Table, AI and Education at Oxford University research hub (AIEOU), and Center for AI and Digital Policy as a research group member.
Background
Before joining the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), Dr. Kennedy obtained his PhD from the University of Sydney, focusing on the history of colonialism, international law, and “scientific” governance. He furthered his research through fellowships at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Sussex. Dr. Kennedy's experience in the technology industry led him to specialize in AI evaluations, where he played a key role in structuring evaluations of AI systems, conducting original research on AI ethics, safety, and governance, and advising public officials on AI policy matters.
Current Project
At OII, Dr. Kennedy is embarking on a new project that explores the colonial past as a source of sociotechnical foresight. This project aims to guide the design, development, deployment, use, and governance of AI systems by learning from historical perspectives.
