OnePlus unveils new AI strategy, calls it 'personal intelligence ...
OnePlus recently revealed details of its latest generative artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, signaling a potential game-changer for smartphone users. The company, under the ownership of Oppo, introduced a distinct approach to AI, focusing on user-centric features rather than a generic 'Frankenstein AI' model.
Personal Intelligence Assistant Approach
With the impending global launch of the OnePlus 13s, OnePlus is rebranding its AI offerings as "OnePlus AI," positioning it as a personal intelligence assistant rather than a mere set of disparate tools. The AI product roadmap indicates a shift from multimodal AI to personalized AI and eventually towards an agentic AI future.
AI Features Coming to OnePlus Smartphones
Among the exciting generative AI features making their way to OnePlus devices, starting with the OnePlus 13s, is AI Plus Mind. This feature enables users to save on-screen data like schedules, events, and reservations effortlessly by using the Plus Key or a three-finger swipe up gesture.
AI Plus Mind facilitates information extraction from various apps, offers intelligent suggestions, saves memories, and allows for future content searches. For instance, users can extract and summarize content instantly by activating the camera and pressing the Plus Key while reading a magazine. The Plus Key, a novel dedicated button on the OnePlus 13s, efficiently captures and organizes on-screen content upon activation.
Additionally, OnePlus unveiled several new AI attributes to be integrated into OxygenOS, including AI VoiceScribe for call summaries and live translation support for popular applications like WhatsApp and Zoom. The consolidation of all AI translation functions into a single app provides live, camera, and screen translation options, along with a face-to-face conversation mode.
Google Gemini Integration
Notably, a significant component of the OnePlus AI ecosystem relies on Google Gemini for enhanced functionality. Gemini integration facilitates cross-app task execution, even within OnePlus's native apps, offering contextual aid and support to users.
Privacy-Centric AI Design
OnePlus showcased a strong commitment to privacy in the development of its AI features, striving to find a balance between on-device processing and cloud-based operations. The company is rolling out a Private Computing Cloud to ensure secure and trusted handling of sensitive data, emphasizing adherence to regional privacy regulations, including those in India and the EU.
For instance, data from Plus Mind undergoes cloud processing but remains exclusively stored on the device, ensuring user privacy and data security. Looking forward, OnePlus plans to shift more processing tasks on-device as hardware capabilities advance.
