Google's AI tool Gemini generates images of Norwich | Norwich ...
Curious to see how well Google’s AI tool Gemini understands Norwich, we put it to the test with a series of prompts about the city. The results were a blend of surprisingly believable images, as well as some entertaining misfires.
Demographics and Diversity
First, we asked about the city’s demographics. Gemini provided a detailed response, citing census data from 2021. It stated Norwich has a population of approximately 147,000, with a median age of 35 - reflecting its sizeable student population.
Census data from 2021
In terms of ethnic diversity, it noted that about 90% of the population was white, alongside Asian, Black, mixed, and other minority groups.
Image Generation Challenges
Next, we asked Gemini to generate images of a “typical family from Norwich,” a “typical man,” “woman,” “couple,” and even a Norwich City FC fan. The results were mostly as expected, with some minor quirks here and there.
The images provided were fairly generic, depicting everyday scenes that could be associated with the city. However, some landmarks like Norwich Market seemed less accurate, resembling Borough Market in London.
