Exploring ChatGPT's Image Watermark Testing for Free Users

ChatGPT is reportedly testing image watermarks, but only on free users

ChatGPT’s image generation tool is now accessible to free users, and OpenAI may be taking steps to clearly label AI-made content. Early tests by researchers suggest that a new ChatGPT image watermark could be introduced to identify images created using the image generation model.

The watermark currently appears subtly on AI-generated images from the free version of ChatGPT. It is in a testing phase and has not been officially announced. If implemented, it would mark a shift from some of the responses by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding ChatGPT's image generation tools potentially infringing on copyrights.

Researchers' Observations

AI researcher Tibor Blaho and others have noted the watermark in the code for ChatGPT’s image generation model. The code specifically references free generation, raising the possibility that the watermark may not apply to premium ChatGPT subscriptions.

This potential change could be significant, especially considering the recent popularity of ChatGPT’s ImageGen model. The generation of various remarkable images since the late March update has garnered significant attention.

The Quest for Authenticity in AIGC Art: Balancing AI and Human Input

Authenticity Concerns

The introduction of the image watermark could be OpenAI’s response to concerns about authenticity and user-generated content produced by ChatGPT. As AI-generated art gains traction online, distinguishing between real and synthetic content becomes crucial not only for creators and developers but also for the audience consuming such content.

Watermarking provides a simple solution to indicate that an image was AI-generated without significantly altering the final output.

OpenAI's Image Generation Technology

According to OpenAI, the image generator is trained on extensive datasets of online images and text. This training approach enables the model to produce visuals that are contextually relevant and coherent. Examples include the creation of Studio Ghibli-styled images in recent weeks.

OpenAI is also working on developing an API for the image generation tool to facilitate third-party developers in building tools around it. Whether the image watermark will extend to the API or remain exclusive to ChatGPT users remains uncertain.
