Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Libraries - Syracuse University
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gained significant attention in academia, not only for its ethical implications but also for its potential to revolutionize the research process for students and faculty. Researchers and developers are continuously working on improving AI tools to enhance the user experience, particularly in academic settings. Syracuse University Libraries is actively involved in using and testing these AI tools and providing research guidance to support researchers in their work.
Advancements in Generative AI Tools
Generative AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini are not only available for public use but are also being customized to meet the specific needs of academic researchers. Tools like Keenious and Perplexity.ai are designed to assist faculty and students in gathering information, conducting literature reviews, and managing resources effectively. These tools offer features such as summaries, citation counts, citations, and resource management to streamline the research process.
While the use of AI tools in research is not new to library services, the incorporation of Generative AI has significantly enhanced the researcher experience. Databases like Scopus, Dimensions, Web of Science, and Inspec Analytics Plus already offer algorithm-based searches with advanced analytics for citation counts, relevant resources, and data visualization.
Future of Generative AI in Research
Leading information providers such as Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions, and ProQuest One Literature are actively developing new Generative AI tools that will be integrated into their databases. These tools will have a competitive edge over existing AI tools by enabling searches beyond Open Access publications. Unlike current tools limited to OA content, these new tools will provide access to abstracts and full text from non-publications, broadening the scope of research possibilities.
