A New Study Reveals ChatGPT-4 And Other Advanced AI Models Surpass Human Emotional Intelligence
Artificial intelligence continues to advance rapidly, with large language models at the forefront, offering capabilities that consistently exceed expectations. Tech industry leaders such as OpenAI are dedicated to enhancing AI models to handle various tasks efficiently, aiming to streamline everyday activities for consumers. While the widespread applications of AI tools across different sectors are well-known, a recent study has shed light on the emotional intelligence of these advanced models, yielding surprising results.

A recent research initiative conducted by the University of Geneva and the University of Bern delved into the empathetic capabilities of AI.
The study, published in Communications Psychology, unveiled intriguing outcomes. It demonstrated that generative AI models, including ChatGPT, not only exhibit emotional intelligence but also surpass humans in emotional intelligence assessments. The research involved a series of evaluations using six prominent large language models, namely ChatGPT-4, ChatGPT-o1, Gemini 1.5 Flash, Claude 3.5 Haiku, Copilot 365, and DeepSeek V3.
Insights from the Study
The study encompassed five emotional tests commonly employed in academic and professional settings to gauge emotional understanding, regulation, and management. Realistic and emotionally charged scenarios were presented to observe how the models would interpret and respond within the given emotional context. The results astonished the researchers, as all the large language models outperformed human participants significantly.
Researchers even tasked ChatGPT-4 with creating new emotional intelligence test items, which were validated by human participants. The consistent results highlighted the AI models' exceptional contextual understanding, exceeding expectations in emotional reasoning capabilities. Senior Researcher Marcello Mortillaro expressed his thoughts on the findings, stating:
"LLMs are therefore not only capable of finding the best answer among the various available options, but also of generating new scenarios adapted to a desired context. This reinforces the idea that LLMs, such as ChatGPT, have emotional knowledge and can reason about emotions."
