Google adds election misinformation protections to Gemini
On August 20, 2024, Google announced new protections for its generative AI products as election season heats up.
Driving the news
Google revealed that it would extend the policies introduced for its search and YouTube products in December to a wider range of its AI products. This extension includes Search AI Overviews, YouTube AI-generated summaries for Live Chat, Gems, and image generation in Gemini.
Why it matters
While some of Google's generative AI products like Search Generative Experience (SGE) and Gemini were already subject to restrictions, these protections are now being expanded to cover more of Google's AI ecosystem.
"We're taking a cautious approach because we want to get this right," the company explained.
The big picture
The rapid adoption of generative AI by consumers has prompted tech companies to swiftly address concerns related to misinformation, particularly in the context of elections.
What to watch
Generative AI will face a significant challenge on U.S. election night in November as voters seek online results.
