Google brings Android 14 for TVs with improved energy modes and more
Google has recently unveiled Android 14 for TVs, introducing a range of enhanced features for both Android and Google TV users. The latest update promises improved performance, reduced power consumption, and new functionalities such as picture-in-picture support. A key highlight of the update is the focus on the new operating system, with Google touting enhancements in performance and sustainability.
Performance and sustainability
According to Google, Android 14 for TV marks a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering a "snappier and more responsive experience." The introduction of new energy modes in this version aims to further enhance user experience by reducing standby power consumption and preventing content from playing when input modes change or the panel switches off. Users can select from three distinct settings based on their network usage preferences to optimize power consumption when the TV is not in use.

Accessibility
The update also brings a host of accessibility features, including color correction, enhanced text options, and improved navigation, all of which can be easily toggled on or off using remote shortcuts. Google asserts that these enhancements will particularly benefit users with motor difficulties.
Multitasking
One of the most anticipated additions is the new picture-in-picture mode, now available on compatible Android 14 TV models. This feature enables users to continue watching content while navigating the home screen or using other applications. While the availability of this feature across all Android 14 TV models remains uncertain, Google indicates that it will be limited to "qualified" models.
Google has not overlooked the role of AI in its TV offerings. The company announced the integration of Gemini, its AI model, to refine recommendations and content descriptions on Google TV. By leveraging Gemini, Google aims to provide personalized content suggestions on the home screen's Featured carousel, as well as fill in missing or untranslated descriptions for movies and shows, facilitating the discovery of new favorites.

While some users may already notice enhanced descriptions on their home screens, the full rollout of these features is expected to take place globally later this year. Reports suggest that the new functionalities will be accessible to all users in the near future.
