Enhanced Image Generation with ChatGPT's GPT-4o: A Deep Dive

ChatGPT, powered by 4o, can now generate 'beautiful and useful images'

On Monday, OpenAI announced an enhanced image-generation capability on ChatGPT, powered by GPT-4o. Available for Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users, as well as developers via API, it is said to be capable of generating images that are “not only beautiful but useful.”

While ChatGPT has been able to generate images for a while, earlier versions used a separate model for image and text generation. The new GPT-4o integrates both functionalities into one, resulting in faster image generation and improved contextual understanding to produce more realistic and higher-quality images. Graphic designers and artists can now generate images with greater detail and accuracy.

Enhanced Techniques for Image Generation

GPT-4o uses techniques like text rendering, multi-turn generation, instruction following, and in-context learning to enhance picture quality. Combined with the world knowledge of GPT-4o, this integration links text and image knowledge to provide more accurate and photorealistic visuals with refined style.

OpenAI acknowledges that the image generator is not perfect. At times, it may produce elongated images that are too tightly framed, introduce inaccuracies due to hallucinations, and struggle with rendering knowledge-based images such as the periodic table. The company has stated that these issues will be addressed after launch.

Transparency and Safeguards

Images generated using GPT-4o will include Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) metadata for added transparency. Also, the system cannot generate images that violate content policies, such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes. It also includes safeguards to prevent the creation of images featuring nudity and graphic violence.
