Latest Pixel Feature Drop Lets You Try Gemini Nano AI on More...
The latest round of new features for Google's Pixel lineup focuses on enhancing the processing power in the company's Pixel 8 series of phones. Google's June 2024 Pixel Feature Drop introduces the availability of its Gemini Nano AI on a wider range of devices, including the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a, in addition to the Pixel 8 Pro.
Enhanced Features
Initially exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro due to memory constraints, the Gemini Nano AI model can now be enabled on the Pixel 8 and 8a by accessing the device's Developer Options. This feature provides various enhancements, such as improved automatic transcription in Google’s Recorder app, video output to a DisplayPort monitor using a USB-C cable, and the ability to utilize Google’s Find My Device service to locate a powered-off phone via Bluetooth for an extended period.
Compatibility and Accessibility
While some features are limited to Pixel devices from 2021 onwards, such as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, newer additions like camera upgrades for HDR photography, reverse phone number lookup, and a Google Home Favorites widget are available on devices supporting Android 12.
Smartwatch Enhancements
For users of the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, safety features have been enhanced to include improved fall detection capabilities, specifically in detecting bicycling crashes. The Pixel Watch 2 also introduces a car-crash detection feature that can automatically alert emergency services in case of an unresponsive user.
Additional Features
Google has also integrated support for PayPal and Google Home watch-face controls into its devices. These features were previously announced and are now being rolled out as part of the latest updates.
Users with both a Pixel Tablet and a Nest Doorbell can expect enhanced notifications, offering the ability to communicate with visitors directly from the tablet, provided they opt into the public preview and have their tablet connected to Google’s Charging Speaker Dock.
