'Star Wars' AI robot open to conversation - Campus Current
Students at Anne Arundel Community College collaborated with Professor Tim Callinan to create a robot inspired by the "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" movie character, K-2SO. This project, which began in fall 2022, involved more than 20 students working together to build the robot.
Named after a droid from the movie, K-2SO is placed in the hallways of the CALT building to engage with students and spark their interest in the mechatronics program. The robot, designed to resemble its on-screen counterpart, uses ChatGPT Open AI to communicate with students by answering questions and holding conversations.
Inspiration from 'Star Wars'
Professor Callinan drew inspiration not only from "Rogue One" but also from the "Star Wars" television series "Andor," particularly the character B2EMO. According to Callinan, the use of artificial intelligence in the robot project aims to expose students to the evolving technology landscape, which he believes will play a significant role in their future.
Reflecting on the rapid advancement of AI, Callinan expressed his surprise at the current level of intelligence achieved by such technology. He emphasized the importance of hands-on projects like this robot creation to keep the academic environment engaging for both students and himself.
Student Experiences and Opportunities
Working on the K-2SO robot provided students with valuable hands-on experience and exposure to cutting-edge technology in the field of mechatronics. Jonathan Gallegos, a third-year mechatronics student, highlighted the project's contribution to his skill development, essential for his career growth.
Gavin Costa, a second-year student who participated in the robot project, emphasized the enjoyable learning experience and the practical skills he gained during the process. Despite facing initial challenges, Costa found the project to be both educational and rewarding.
The integration of AI technology in educational projects like K-2SO demonstrates the College's commitment to preparing students for the future job market, where artificial intelligence is expected to play an increasingly prominent role.
