Oppo teams up with Google for enhanced privacy AI features
Chinese smartphone giant Oppo is following in the footsteps of Apple by implementing a private cloud computing system to safeguard users' sensitive information from its own AI technologies. In collaboration with Google, Oppo is set to utilize the Confidential Computing software, which employs encryption methods to secure user data, ensuring it remains inaccessible to external entities.
Privacy-Preserving Solution: Private Computing Cloud
The newly introduced Private Computing Cloud from Oppo aims to prevent the sharing of personal data such as private calls and browser searches with the company for AI training purposes. By leveraging Google's Gemini foundation models, Oppo is enhancing its AI capabilities while maintaining user privacy.
Emulating Apple's Privacy Efforts
Oppo's move towards prioritizing user privacy mirrors Apple's initiatives to safeguard user data from its AI system, Apple Intelligence. Apple introduced the Private Cloud Compute (PCC) system last year, specifically tailored for private AI processing.
According to Oppo, the Private Computing Cloud system will incorporate various features including recording and call summarization, search functionalities, and image generation. As the sixth-largest smartphone manufacturer in China, Oppo holds a significant market share, emphasizing the importance of user privacy in the AI-driven smartphone landscape.
Focus on Privacy Amidst Growing Concerns
Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, highlighted the relevance of Oppo's privacy-centric approach in addressing the mounting privacy concerns surrounding AI utilization, particularly among Chinese device manufacturers. This strategic move signifies Oppo's commitment to establishing itself as a key player in the AI-powered smartphone sector.
Additionally, Oppo unveiled new AI features such as call translation and voice transcription, along with the integration of Google's Gemini model into its Notes, Calendar, and Clock applications. The company's objective is to introduce Google's latest Gemini 2.0 AI model to its devices, offering enhanced user experiences through autonomous AI actions.
Oppo aims to extend its advanced AI capabilities to 100 million users by the end of 2025, doubling its target from the previous year, as it continues to innovate and prioritize user privacy in the rapidly evolving technology landscape.
