OTIC Foundation equips Ugandans with AI skills
As artificial intelligence (AI) applications and systems like ChatGPT, Meta AI, Perplexity, and Brain Task AI become more prevalent, there is a growing concern about the potential of these technologies to replace human jobs. However, Nesta Paul Katende, the founder of OTIC Foundation, encourages people to embrace AI and incorporate it into their daily work to enhance productivity.
Katende envisions equipping over one million Ugandans with essential AI skills through the initiatives of the OTIC Foundation. In collaboration with the ministry of ICT and National Guidance, the foundation has launched training programs at the National ICT Innovation Hub, attracting over 715 professionals from various backgrounds.
Partnership and Training Programs
The partnership with the Data scientists Network (DSN) has led to the initiation of the 'AI in Every City' campaign. This campaign, launched at the National ICT Innovation Hub, aims to educate participants on AI technologies and their practical applications. The training includes programs on Microsoft's Power BI for data visualization and Python Script for machine learning.
Katende draws parallels between the importance of AI today and the impact of the steam engine during the first industrial revolution. He emphasizes the need for individuals to grasp and leverage AI systems effectively in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
AI Skills for Sustainable Business
The AI skilling provided by OTIC Foundation is envisioned to empower Ugandans to establish sustainable businesses utilizing AI technologies. Katende believes that as the world transitions into the fourth industrial revolution with AI at its core, it is essential for individuals to adapt and innovate with these advancements.
Ben Nakireza, head of Business Development at OTIC Foundation, highlights the significance of formulating the right prompts to elicit accurate responses from AI systems such as ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. He emphasizes the creative aspect of utilizing AI technology and the role it plays in driving innovation beyond mundane tasks.
Government Regulations and Ethical AI Use
Katende advocates for the establishment of ethical government regulations that promote the responsible use of AI technologies. He stresses the importance of data privacy and the role regulations play in mitigating risks associated with the misuse of AI.
While AI may automate repetitive tasks, Nakireza asserts that it cannot replace the ingenuity of human creativity. He encourages individuals to leverage AI as a tool for innovation, highlighting the need to pose relevant questions to drive meaningful outcomes.
The efforts of OTIC Foundation in equipping Ugandans with AI skills aim to not only prepare individuals for the changing technological landscape but also empower them to thrive in an AI-driven world.
