Google Adds AI Mode in Search, Uses Gemini 2.0 to Answer 'Harder ...
Google recently unveiled a new 'AI Mode' for search, as part of their ongoing experiments in labs. This feature is described as an upgrade to the existing AI Overviews, demonstrating capabilities in advanced reasoning and multimodal functionalities.
According to a demonstration video, the AI mode will be integrated as a standalone panel within the Google Search interface. The technology behind this feature involves a custom version of Gemini 2.0, a tool particularly suited for addressing complex questions that require deeper exploration, comparisons, and reasoning.
Google stated in the announcement that users can not only access high-quality web content but also tap into real-time sources like the Knowledge Graph, real-world information, and data on billions of products for shopping purposes.
Features of AI Mode:
- Utilizes a 'query fan-out' technique
- Conducts multiple related searches concurrently across various subtopics and data sources
- Capable of citing real-time information
Google further explained, "For instance, if you inquire about the differences in sleep tracking features among a smart ring, smartwatch, and tracking mat, the custom version of Gemini 2.0 employs a multistep approach to analyze, search for relevant information, and adapt the plan based on the findings."
Users with a Google One AI Premium subscription can test this feature in Labs. Additionally, Google mentioned that they are expanding the availability of AI Overviews to more users, eliminating the need for sign-ins to access this functionality.
The introduction of Google's new AI mode will pose competition to other AI-enabled search tools such as Perplexity and ChatGPT search, which recently became free for all users.
Earlier this week, Google introduced a Data Science Agent on the Colab platform, powered by the Gemini 2.0 AI model. This agent assists users in achieving their set goals by simulating a typical data scientist's workflow. It can be utilized for tasks like data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and more.
Designers are now exploring the potential of AI tools to enhance their workflows in various aspects.
