CMU-Africa deepens external engagement and partnerships
Carnegie Mellon University Africa continues to expand its footprint as a leading hub for innovation, education, and collaborative development through a series of high-impact engagements with global partners, government agencies, and thought leaders. These efforts underscore CMU-Africa's mission to foster excellence and build robust networks that bridge academia, industry, and policy across Africa and beyond.
Recent Engagements
In recent months, CMU-Africa has welcomed several high-level delegations and distinguished partners, each contributing to the university's growing ecosystem of innovation and collaboration. The visit by Fatmata Lovetta Sesay, the United Nations Development Program resident representative in Rwanda, marked a significant milestone, featuring discussions on aligning academic programs with national development priorities and exploring joint initiatives in innovation and capacity building.
Similarly, a high-level delegation from a Kenyan Parliamentary select committee undertaking a learning mission to establish a new science and technology university in partnership with Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), visited CMU-Africa to draw inspiration from its model of excellence in higher education and public-private collaborations.
CMU-Africa faculty and students showcased cutting-edge research at the Global AI Summit on Africa and the Times Higher Education Africa Universities Summit in Kigali. These engagements reinforced the university's position as a continental leader in AI and open-source innovation and facilitated collaboration with peer institutions and strategic stakeholders.
Focus on AI and Open-Source Innovation
CMU-Africa hosted representatives from OpenAI to explore ethical AI development, African data representation in large-scale AI models, and opportunities for collaboration through the newly launched OpenAI Academy in Africa. The collaboration aims to amplify African leadership in the global AI space and strengthen relationships between students, faculty, and researchers.
With a commitment to transparency and collaboration, CMU-Africa welcomed Mozilla Corporation to initiate the formation of an open-source advisory board. This initiative aims to cultivate an open-source ecosystem on campus and empower students to contribute to global technology platforms.
Representatives from Partners in AI, a consortium of global technology companies, visited the campus to explore paid virtual internship opportunities for students, further supporting CMU-Africa’s mission to connect top talent with real-world experience.

On May 24, seven CMU-Africa students participated in the 20th-anniversary celebration of the Imbuto Foundation's Girls' Education Campaign, reaffirming the university’s commitment to inclusive excellence and access to quality education for all.
