New Language Tools for Developers

Google is collaborating with MeitY ‘Startup Hub’ to provide training for 10,000 startups in artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative is part of Google's efforts to expand access to its AI models and introduce new language tools for developers in India.

At the ‘I/O Connect’ event held recently, Google announced a series of tools, programs, and partnerships aimed at empowering Indian developers and startups to lead the global AI revolution. Developers in India can now benefit from increased access to Google's powerful AI models, including the two million token context window in Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemma 2, the next generation of open models.

"We're dedicated to empowering Indian innovators to unlock the full potential of AI, creating solutions that cater to India's specific requirements while also shaping the future of AI worldwide," stated Ambharish Kenghe, Vice President at Google. The potential presented by multimodal, mobile, and multilingual AI is significant, and Google is excited to support India's AI journey.

Expanded Projects and Initiatives

Google has expanded Project Vaani in India in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), offering developers access to over 14,000 hours of speech data in 58 languages, gathered from 80,000 speakers across 80 districts. Additionally, the introduction of IndicGenBench and the open-sourcing of CALM (Composition of Language Models) aim to evaluate the generation capabilities of LLMs on Indic languages.

Furthermore, Google is introducing Google Wallet APIs to streamline the integration of loyalty programs, tickets, and gift cards for developers. For developers utilizing the Google Maps Platform, India-specific pricing is being rolled out, offering up to 70% lower costs on most APIs. The company is also collaborating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), providing developers building for ONDC discounts of up to 90% on selected Google Maps Platform APIs.

Seshu Ajjarapu, Senior Director at Google DeepMind, highlighted the potential of AI in various sectors, from consumer experiences to agriculture and social enterprises. The company is set to launch the Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) Research API, a tool designed to enhance agricultural practices with data-driven insights.
