India partners with Meta on digital consumer protection initiative...
India's Ministry of Consumer Affairs has teamed up with tech giant Meta to introduce a new consumer awareness campaign titled "Be an Empowered Consumer." This initiative aims to enhance digital literacy and safeguard online consumers. The collaboration was announced by Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan under the government's existing "Jago Grahak Jago" (Wake Up Consumer) campaign framework.
"Consumer awareness is key to a sustainable and secure digital experience," stated Minister Joshi during the launch event. He emphasized that the partnership with Meta will help extend consumer protection efforts to remote areas of the country. The joint campaign will primarily focus on educating Indian consumers about identifying online threats, advocating for better digital safety practices such as using strong passwords, verifying online information, and reporting suspicious activities.

AI-driven Consumer Protection
As part of this initiative, an AI-driven project developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and supported by Meta was also unveiled. This project introduces "GrahakNyay," a consumer-centric chatbot that leverages Meta's Llama 2 language model to provide information on consumer rights and simplify the complaint filing process. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare highlighted that this chatbot will facilitate seamless complaint filing and grievance resolution.
Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, expressed the company's belief in the power of AI to enhance consumer awareness and protection. By making AI more accessible, they aim to empower individuals with the information needed to make informed decisions online and streamline complaint resolution processes.
Addressing Consumer Challenges
This partnership between India's Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Meta comes in the wake of increasing efforts to tackle emerging challenges in the digital marketplace. These challenges include combating misleading advertisements, addressing unfair trade practices, and safeguarding consumer interests in e-commerce transactions.
