Elon Musk Plans to Launch AI Startup to Rival OpenAI ChatGPT
According to a report in the Financial Times, Elon Musk is planning to start a new venture to challenge OpenAI ChatGPT. The article cites insiders familiar with the entrepreneur's plans. It is noteworthy that Musk recently expressed concerns about ChatGPT's representation of technological trends.
Musk co-founded OpenAI's laboratory, which is where ChatGPT and GPT-4 originated. The news follows a report in Business Insider that Elon Musk purchased 10,000 graphic processing units to help create Large Language Models that can generate text similar to that written by humans.
Musk has reportedly urged investors in Tesla and SpaceX to invest in the new AI start-up. It will require a different set of expertise from his driverless vehicle firm or space program. The same report suggests that Musk has been actively recruiting engineers from DeepMind and other AI labs.
In recent tweets, Elon Musk has joked about the intensifying competition surrounding AI. He has also mentioned the tension between AI products and services, and those that humans still make themselves. However, Musk used to have doubts about ChatGPT and related developments.
In fact, just two weeks ago, Musk was one of over a thousand tech executives, investors, and researchers who signed an open letter calling for a pause on AI research until we better understand the implications. The letter warns that AI systems with human-competitive intelligence pose profound risks to society and humanity. It concludes by urging AI labs to pause for at least six months in the development of systems surpassing GPT-4.
Despite Musk's concerns about AI, he is pushing ahead with his new AI start-up plans. In doing so, he is seeking to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT.
