Unhappy with OpenAI, Musk Explores New AI Lab Venture
Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI, is reportedly in discussions with a former DeepMind AI researcher to establish a new AI lab that would rival OpenAI. According to a recent report by The Information, Musk has been engaging with AI researchers to form a team for this new venture.
Musk's Critique of OpenAI
Musk's dissatisfaction with OpenAI stems from his criticism of the organization's approach to AI development. In a tweet last December, Musk publicly expressed his disapproval of OpenAI's methods, particularly in training AI models to be "woke." He further underscored his concerns by stating "BasedAI" in a subsequent tweet.
OpenAI's Evolution and Musk's Discontent
Musk's discontent with OpenAI also extends to the organization's evolving relationship with Microsoft. In response to a Twitter post concerning the risks associated with AI, Musk criticized the current state of OpenAI, stating that it has deviated from its original purpose of being an open-source and non-profit entity.
One of the individuals Musk is eyeing for his new project is Igor Babuschkin, a former researcher at Google's DeepMindAI lab. Despite the early discussions, Babuschkin clarified to The Information that his involvement with Musk's initiative is not yet confirmed and remains in its preliminary phases.
Microsoft's recent multi-billion investment in OpenAI, announced in January, raised further questions about the future direction of the organization. Musk's newfound focus on establishing a competing AI lab is likely to draw attention away from his other ventures, including Tesla, where investors have urged him to prioritize the electric car company over other distractions.
