Google brings Gemini to Messages and adds AI text summaries for driving distractions
Google has announced a series of Android updates at the start of MWC this year. These updates include Gemini integration with Messages and AI-powered text summaries specifically designed for when users are driving.
Enhancements in Messages
With the new updates, Messages users can now seamlessly access Google's chatbot directly within the texting app. The Gemini integration allows for various tasks such as drafting messages, event planning assistance, and casual chatting. While the feature is currently in beta and limited to English-language users, Google aims to expand its availability in the future.
Improvements in Android Auto
Android Auto now benefits from AI technology to reduce distractions while driving. The system can automatically summarize lengthy messages from group chats or individuals, providing a more concise version to users. Additionally, it suggests quick replies and actions, like sharing estimated time of arrival, enabling drivers to respond with minimal interaction and maintain focus on the road.
Accessibility Features and More
Google also introduced new accessibility features for Android, including AI-generated image captions in the Lookout app. This feature offers descriptions for images sourced online or received in messages, which are then read aloud to users. Similarly, the Lens feature in Maps receives an enhanced screen reader option, providing users with audio information about their surroundings when pointing the phone's camera at objects like restaurants or transit stations.
Moreover, there are new casting controls for Spotify named Spotify Connect, allowing users to switch between devices seamlessly. While this feature was initially available for YouTube Music, it now extends to Spotify as well.
