Despite this achievement, DeepSeek still lags behind ChatGPT in overall monthly traffic.

Market Share and User Base

OpenAI's ChatGPT leads the market with over five billion monthly visits, capturing 43.16% of the global market share. Canva holds the second position with nearly one billion visits, followed by DeepSeek with approximately 800 million visits, constituting 6.58% of the market.

Data from Chinese analytics firm QuestMobile revealed that DeepSeek surpassed ChatGPT in daily active users by late January, reaching over 30 million users by early February. This milestone marked DeepSeek as the fastest-growing AI platform to achieve such a feat.

In February, DeepSeek also secured a spot among the top five in active monthly users, based on data from AI tracker AIcpb. With 33.7 million active users, DeepSeek trailed behind Nova AI (56.6 million), Gemini, and Doubao (78.61 million), while ChatGPT claimed the top spot with over 349 million monthly users.

Global Reach

DeepSeek's traffic is primarily driven by China, accounting for 30.71% of its user base, followed by India (13.59%), Indonesia (6.94%), and the U.S. (4.34%).

Founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, co-founder of AI-focused investment fund High Flyer, DeepSeek commenced its development in April of the previous year and launched its open-source R1 reasoning model on Jan. 20. This model aims to rival OpenAI's Q* (Q-Star) in logical inference.
