Introducing 'Deep Research' Mode in ChatGPT by OpenAI
OpenAI has recently unveiled a new feature called 'deep research' mode for ChatGPT, enabling users to conduct in-depth research tasks with multiple steps. This addition marks the introduction of Deep Research, the second AI agent from OpenAI, following the launch of Operator AI for browser-related activities. 
The Power of Deep Research
Deep Research harnesses the capabilities of OpenAI's advanced o3 reasoning model, specifically designed for tasks involving web exploration and data analysis. This AI agent is adept at searching, interpreting, and analyzing large volumes of text, images, and PDFs from the web. The output generated by Deep Research aims to provide users with a comprehensive report comparable to insights from a research analyst, as claimed by OpenAI.
Enhanced Functionality and Future Updates
Unlike typical searches on ChatGPT, deep research inquiries may take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to deliver results. Users will receive a notification from the chatbot once their research findings are ready. 
While the current version of Deep Research supports text-based outputs, OpenAI has revealed plans to incorporate embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytical results in the upcoming weeks.
Challenges and Future Developments
Similar to other AI tools developed by OpenAI, deep research is susceptible to instances of hallucination, where the AI may generate false information. The company openly acknowledges this limitation, citing challenges in differentiating between factual data and rumors, as well as issues with confidence calibration and uncertainty communication.
OpenAI also acknowledges the dilemma of verifying the accuracy of detailed reports generated by deep research, considering the potential inaccuracies or fabricated details. 
The reliance on verifying detailed citations to validate information may counter the convenience of utilizing an AI agent for research purposes.

OpenAI plans to enhance Deep Research's capabilities by enabling connections to specialized data sources, which may include subscription-based or internal resources.
