Meta's CTO Predicts The Specs Of A 2030 Quest Headset
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth shared his predictions on the resolution, field of view, refresh rate, weight, and audio solution for a Meta headset expected to be available in 2031. The evolution of Meta's headsets over the years was discussed, from the launch of the Oculus Go to the latest Quest 3 offering.
Looking Back
Six years ago, Facebook introduced the Oculus Go, a standalone headset lacking positional tracking or 6DoF tracked controllers. Five years later, the first Quest was launched, which included both features. The current Quest 3 boasts a slim design, pancake lenses, 2K per eye resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, color passthrough mixed reality, and ringless controllers.
Future Predictions
Speculating on the future, Bosworth discussed what the potential features of a Quest 5 or Quest 6 in the early 2030s might include. In an interview with Matthew Ball, author of The Metaverse: And How It Will Revolutionize Everything, Bosworth outlined his expectations for Meta's headsets seven years from now.
"A credible glimpse of the future," Bosworth described the headset he envisions, highlighting attributes such as:
- Resolution improvements
- Enhanced frame rate
- Reduced weight
- Advanced audio solutions
While these are all speculative projections, Bosworth emphasized the potential for changes in Meta's strategies, focus, leadership, and technological advancements that could influence the final product. Unforeseen breakthroughs or challenges may impact the development of these features.
