Debunking the Myth: AI's Impact on Wages and Jobs

AI Isn't Lowering Your Salary Just Yet, Says Research

Despite concerns about AI's impact on the job market, new research focusing on the Danish labor market suggests that the adoption of AI has not had a significant effect on jobs or wages. The study, conducted by economists from the University of Chicago and the University of Copenhagen, examined the effects of AI chatbots on various professions, including accountancy, IT support, teaching, journalism, and software development.

AI Chatbots and Their Impact

The research, based on survey data from 25,000 workers and 7,000 workplaces in Denmark, challenges the notion of imminent labor market transformation due to Generative AI. While AI led to modest productivity gains, averaging a time saving of 3% per worker, the study found that these gains were offset by the introduction of new tasks created by AI technologies. For example, AI chatbots were reported to have created new job tasks for 8.4% of workers.

Anders Humlum, one of the economists involved in the study, highlighted the challenges of applying AI directly to real-world tasks. He noted that tasks often require additional human input beyond what AI can automate entirely. Humlum cited examples of teachers using AI to detect cheating among students as a result of AI adoption in education.

The Reality of AI Adoption

Despite the rapid adoption of AI chatbots in various professions, the study suggests that this adoption has not significantly impacted real-world outcomes such as wages or employment features. While many employers have embraced AI initiatives, the overall effect on jobs and wages has been limited.

While the short-term impact of AI on jobs and wages may not be revolutionary, public perceptions remain cautious. Only 23% of Americans believe that AI will have a positive impact on job performance, compared to 73% of AI experts, according to research conducted by the Pew Center.

Overall, the study sheds light on the complex relationship between AI technology and the labor market, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of the role AI plays in shaping the future of work.
