Chula Pioneers Generative AI for Education with "ChulaGENIE"
On November 29, 2024, Chulalongkorn University (Chula), in collaboration with Google Cloud, unveiled a groundbreaking initiative known as ChulaGENIE. This project introduces generative AI (gen AI) capabilities to the entire Chula community, facilitating the safe and secure use of advanced AI technologies.
Introducing ChulaGENIE
ChulaGENIE, short for ‘Chula’s Generative AI Environment for Nurturing Intelligence and Education,’ is set to roll out in phases. Initially accessible to Chula staff and faculty members in January 2025, all students will gain access by March 2025. By leveraging Model Garden on Vertex AI, ChulaGENIE allows users to explore a curated selection of AI foundation models suited for various tasks.
Users will have access to Google’s Gemini 1.5 Flash and Gemini 1.5 Pro models, with future options including enterprise-grade versions of models from Anthropic’s Claude and Meta’s Llama. These models offer multilingual capabilities, enabling users to generate and comprehend content in various languages, including Thai and English.
Enhancing Educational Capabilities
ChulaGENIE's advanced features, such as multimodality and long context windows, empower users to analyze complex documents, extract insights from extensive datasets, and summarize academic literature efficiently. This functionality proves especially beneficial for researchers, aiding in data analysis and literature review processes.
Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, emphasized the university's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to benefit society. By harnessing Google Cloud's Vertex AI, ChulaGENIE was developed and launched within three months, positioning Chula as a trailblazer in offering customizable, responsible gen AI applications for higher education.

Additionally, features like Grounding with Google Search ensure the accuracy of ChulaGENIE's responses while upholding user privacy.
Furthermore, Chula prioritizes data security and confidentiality by utilizing Google Cloud’s enterprise-grade encryption and access controls. This approach ensures that user data remains private and secure throughout the AI interaction.

Looking ahead, Chula plans to expand its collaboration with Google Cloud to develop a domain-specific Thai large language model for higher education.
