According to the findings of the study, GPTs have the ability to significantly impact a wide array of jobs in the US economy, showcasing a defining characteristic of general-purpose technologies.

Exposure of Jobs to Large Language Models

The study specifically highlights the concept of exposure that each job faces in relation to large language models. Exposure, in this context, refers to whether the utilization of a GPT or GPT-powered system can lead to a minimum 50 percent reduction in the time required for humans to carry out their tasks. Jobs with higher exposure levels are at a greater risk of automation.

Interestingly, the study reveals that higher-paying jobs are more susceptible to automation when compared to lower-paying roles. Additionally, occupations that heavily rely on analytical and critical thinking skills are deemed to be less prone to automation. Conversely, jobs that necessitate expertise in programming and writing are more vulnerable to being automated.

Jobs at High Risk of Automation

The study has identified certain roles that are at a heightened risk of automation, including Web and Digital Interface Designers, Blockchain Engineers, Tax Preparers, Writers, and Authors.

Furthermore, the research also discloses a list of 34 jobs that exhibit significantly lower exposure to GPT-powered models, indicating a minimal likelihood of being impacted by Large Language Models. This list comprises professions such as athletes, cooks, mechanics, helpers, tapers, and tire repairers.

Impact of ChatGPT on Job Market

It is worth noting that this is not the first instance where OpenAI has contemplated the potential consequences of its technologies on employment opportunities. Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that ChatGPT could potentially displace numerous jobs. However, he emphasized that the technology also has the capacity to create new job opportunities that are presently unforeseeable.
