ChatGPT vs. DeepSeek: Indonesia Must Negotiate to Avoid...

The trade war between the United States and its allies in Europe against China is heating up, including in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. The presence of DeepSeek, a Chinese-made AI that is predicted to be a competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT. However, in the midst of this shift in technological power, Indonesia is considered to have to immediately determine its stance so as not to just become a market without strategic benefits.

DeepSeek Poses a Threat

Executive Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Heru Sutadi assessed that although DeepSeek still needs time to compete with ChatGPT's dominance, its existence has become a threat to other major AI players. "This new DeepSeek certainly needs time to really compete with ChatGPT which is already widely used by the public and industry. But its presence is a threat to other major players," he said when contacted.

Indonesia's Role in the AI Industry

According to Heru, Indonesia has primarily played a greater role as a user or market for AI technology rather than a producer. With the exit of Chinese AI from several global markets due to geopolitical tensions, Indonesia has a great opportunity to negotiate strategic advantages in adopting new technologies. "Indonesia must realize our position as a major market with better negotiations with these big players. We must consider which one contributes more to investment, employment, and technology transfer that can be adopted by Indonesia," said Heru.

Ensuring Strategic Benefits

Heru emphasized that Indonesia must be more than just a consumer in the AI industry. The government needs to establish policies that ensure the adoption of foreign AI technology remains profitable for the national economy. If there are no regulations governing technology transfer and data protection, Indonesia will become increasingly dependent on other countries.

Looking Towards the Future

With the rapid development of AI, Heru advised Indonesia to ensure that the policies taken do not only make the country a consumption area but also gain strategic benefits in the form of increasing domestic industrial capacity and technology transfer.
