OpenAI is Working on Web Search Feature for ChatGPT
OpenAI, the organization known for its advanced AI technology, is reportedly in the process of developing web search capabilities for its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. This new feature is set to enhance the functionality of ChatGPT by enabling users to access information from the web directly through the chatbot.
According to The Information, OpenAI's initiative to integrate web search features into ChatGPT was first disclosed in February. More recently, Bloomberg shared additional insights on how the web search function within ChatGPT is expected to function.
Enhanced Search Capabilities
The new web search feature aims to provide users with accurate and detailed responses sourced from the web, including information from sources like Wikipedia entries and blog posts. Users will be able to pose questions to ChatGPT, and in return, receive responses that are not only informative but also include proper citations.
Moreover, one variation of the web search feature is designed to supplement written responses with relevant images. This visual aid is intended to help users better comprehend the information provided by the chatbot.

Competition and Challenges
Upon its launch in 2022, ChatGPT quickly gained immense popularity, posing a significant competitive threat to Google's search business. In response, tech giants like Google and Microsoft introduced their versions of AI chatbots, such as Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, to rival ChatGPT.
However, a key concern associated with generative AI applications like ChatGPT is the risk of copyright infringement. Unlike some competing products that cite their sources, ChatGPT generates responses using publicly available content without providing proper attributions.

For instance, Microsoft's Copilot AI and Google's experimental Search Generative Experience incorporate mechanisms to display AI-generated responses alongside traditional search results.
Future Outlook
To stay competitive in the evolving landscape of AI-driven search technologies, OpenAI is expected to launch a full-fledged web search product. This move will not only position OpenAI as a formidable player in the AI chatbot domain but also enable it to better compete with industry leaders like Google.
Looking ahead, Google is anticipated to unveil its latest AI innovations at the upcoming I/O developer conference starting on May 14. Similarly, Microsoft is likely to introduce further updates to Copilot during its Build conference on May 21-23.
