AI that can think: OpenAI says new ChatGPT models have reasoning capabilities
OpenAI recently introduced a new artificial intelligence model named o3, under the ChatGPT series, that is designed to process and understand images, diagrams, and sketches provided by users, even if they are of low quality.
The o3 model, along with its mini version o4-mini, marks the second major advancement in OpenAI's reasoning models, following the release of the first model, o1, in September. With the o3 model, users can now upload various visual inputs such as whiteboards and sketches for the AI to analyze and engage with. Additionally, these models come equipped with image editing functionalities like zooming and rotating.
According to OpenAI, these reasoning models have been enhanced to utilize all ChatGPT tools independently, including web browsing, Python, image understanding, and image generation. This capability enables the AI to effectively tackle complex, multi-step problems and progress towards autonomous decision-making.

OpenAI highlighted that the o3 and o4-mini models represent a significant milestone as they are the first models capable of "thinking with images," allowing them to integrate visual data directly into their logic and decision-making processes.
The o3 model is specifically optimized for tasks involving mathematics, coding, scientific analysis, and image comprehension, while the o4-mini version offers faster performance at a more cost-effective rate. Both models were made accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users on Wednesday.
User Base Growth for ChatGPT
During a recent conversation with TED curator Chris Anderson, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that the user base for ChatGPT has witnessed a significant growth, doubling in just a few weeks. Altman expressed that a substantial portion of the global population now engages with their systems, showcasing the widespread adoption of their AI solutions.
OpenAI has experienced a remarkable increase in its user base in recent months, particularly since the end of last year. As of December 2024, the platform reported an estimated 300 million weekly active users on ChatGPT, a figure that likely doubled following the introduction of their latest image generation tool.
