OpenAI Pauses ChatGPT's 'Browse With Bing' as Users Bypass Paywalls
ChatGPT has proven to be a versatile tool for a wide range of applications, albeit with varying degrees of success. Recently, OpenAI rolled out an integration with Bing for ChatGPT Plus, a feature called Browse with Bing. This integration aimed to enhance users' ability to search for information through the chatbot's mobile app by utilizing the Bing search engine.
According to TechCrunch, OpenAI designed this feature to assist users in accessing up-to-date information, especially for current events, given that ChatGPT's training data is limited to content up to 2021. However, less than a week after the launch, OpenAI made the decision to halt the Browse with Bing collaboration due to unforeseen issues.
Discovery of Bypassing Paywalls
On July 3, 2023, OpenAI announced the suspension of the Browse with Bing beta feature in response to concerns about users bypassing paywalls on websites. Michael Schade of OpenAI explained in a blog post that the feature was disabled to address these issues and to respect content owners' rights.
Schade highlighted that the Browse feature was unintentionally displaying content in a manner that was not intended. While OpenAI is working to resolve the issue promptly, the feature remains unavailable for the time being.
Impact on Paywalls
Reports from Windows Central confirmed that users were indeed able to circumvent paywalls using ChatGPT's Browse with Bing feature. By simply providing the chatbot with a URL, users could access the full content of paywalled websites, essentially turning the chatbot into a web browser.
Despite this setback, the collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI has been fruitful, with Microsoft making significant investments in the AI startup earlier this year. The partnership led to the integration of ChatGPT with the Bing search engine, serving as a strategic move to compete with Google's search capabilities.
While Browse with Bing is currently on hold, it is expected to return once the necessary adjustments have been made to prevent users from bypassing paywalls.
