SOUTH KOREA AIMS TO DEVELOP ITS OWN CHATGPT: ACTING PRESIDENT
SEOUL, Feb 20 - South Korea is set to embark on the development of its own AI chatbot, similar to the ChatGPT created by US-based OpenAI. Acting President Choi Sang-mok announced the country's plans on Thursday, highlighting the government's commitment to providing extensive support for research and development in this field, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Advancing AI Technology
During a high-level committee meeting focused on establishing South Korea as one of the top three AI powerhouses globally, Choi emphasized the evolving landscape of the global AI race. He pointed out that major players in the AI industry have made substantial investments in AI infrastructure, signaling a new phase in AI development.
Choi also acknowledged the emergence of DeepSeek, a large-scale AI model developed by a Chinese start-up, as both a potential threat and an opportunity for South Korea, which is striving to catch up in the AI sector.
Government Support and Initiatives
To enhance the country's AI capabilities, the South Korean government is planning to procure 10,000 high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) by the end of the year. This move is significant as South Korea only had around 2,000 GPUs as of the end of 2023, a crucial component for AI development.
Choi reiterated the government's commitment to providing ample GPU resources and research funding to ensure that South Korea leads in AI innovation.
The government's initiative to develop its own AI chatbot is part of a larger strategy to strengthen the country's position in the global AI landscape and drive advancements in AI technology.
