OpenAI just launched advanced voice mode for audio chats with ChatGPT
ChatGPT is now equipped for more natural audio conversations. OpenAI recently revealed that its popular chatbot has introduced an advanced voice feature for premium service subscribers. This innovative tool enables smoother and more engaging interactions, enhancing the overall user experience.
The release of this new feature is ongoing throughout the week. However, it is important to note that this advanced voice mode is currently not accessible in EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, or the U.K.
Exciting Development
In a noteworthy announcement made in May, OpenAI unveiled this new capability, generating significant buzz due to a voice named "Sky" bearing a striking resemblance to Scarlett Johansson's voice in the movie "Her" from 2013. Legal representatives acting on behalf of Johansson raised concerns regarding the use of this near-identical voice, leading OpenAI to pause its inclusion in their products, as reported by CNBC.
Since then, users have been able to customize ChatGPT to interact in various voices through a free tier. The advanced version now offers quicker responses and the ability to pause and listen when interrupted. With a selection of nine voices available, users can input specific instructions for voice chats within the app's Customizations settings.
Competition in the Market
The landscape of generative AI chatbots is becoming increasingly competitive for OpenAI, a company supported by Microsoft. As Google introduced its own Gemini Live voice feature for English on Android devices in recent weeks, and Meta is set to launch celebrity voices accessible through Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, OpenAI faces stiff competition in the market.
OpenAI initially gained traction in the generative AI chatbot sector with the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022. The company revealed to media outlets in August that ChatGPT has amassed over 200 million weekly active users.
Exclusive Access
The advanced voice mode is exclusively available to subscribers of OpenAI's Plus, Team, or Enterprise plans. The entry-level option is the Plus tier, priced at $20 per month.
For those with subscriptions, getting started is straightforward provided OpenAI has granted access to your device. Ensure you have the latest version of the app installed on your phone, open the ChatGPT app, and follow the prompts to access the new feature. You can select from various voices and initiate voice chats for different purposes.
With the advanced voice mode, users can enjoy a range of activities such as listening to bedtime stories, preparing for job interviews, or practicing foreign languages. However, usage of advanced voice mode is subject to daily rate limits for Plus and Team subscription tiers, after which users revert to the standard version.
Moreover, transitioning from text to advanced voice mode or vice versa is not supported, according to a help page on the OpenAI website.
