Google adds Gemini to its Chromebook Plus devices with partners

Google has announced that Google AI and gaming features are now available on its Chromebook Plus devices. According to John Maletis, Vice President, ChromeOS Product, Engineering and UX at Google, "with Google AI, getting things done on your Chromebook Plus will be easier than ever".

New AI Features

Google has introduced new AI-enabled features, including Gemini, to the homescreen of all Chromebook Plus devices. Users can simply tap the icon in the app shelf and start typing to use Gemini AI. Additionally, Google is offering the Google One AI Premium plan at no cost to new Chromebook Plus users for 12 months. This plan includes access to Gemini Advanced, 2TB of storage, and Gemini integration in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail.

Automatic Updates and New Devices

Google mentioned that the new features will be rolled out to existing Chromebook Plus users through an automatic update over the next week. For new users, partners HP, Acer, and ASUS are launching new devices. For instance, Acer is introducing the Chromebook Plus Spin 714 and the cloud-gaming-optimized Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE.

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is a 14-inch WUXGA, 2-in-1 convertible device powered by up to an Intel Core Ultra processor. It features Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.1, HDMI 2.0, two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a USB Type-A port.

Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE

The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE comes with 13th Gen Intel Core i7 processors, up to 2TB PCIe NVMe SSD storage, and up to 16GB of fast LPDDR4X RAM. It boasts a WQXGA (2560x1600) IPS display, a 120Hz refresh rate, DTS audio supported by four speakers, and up to 10 hours of battery life.

Gaming Performance

Both the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 and Chromebook Plus 516 GE are designed for gaming. Users can join other players in the latest AAA games via NVIDIA GeForce NOW without any downloads. The devices support streaming of up to 1600p resolution and 120fps with an Ultimate membership, utilizing cloud-based GeForce RTX 4080 servers.

Pricing and Availability

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 and Chromebook Plus 516 GE will be available in North America in May, starting at US$749.99 and US$699.99 respectively. Acer noted that specifications, prices, and availability may vary by region.
