An active-duty US Army Green Beret identified as Matthew Livelsberger, 37, of Colorado, used ChatGPT to plan an attack involving the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department revealed during a press conference that the soldier utilized the generative artificial intelligence chatbot to gather information for his plot.
Planning the Attack
Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren stated that Livelsberger used ChatGPT to learn about the amount of explosives needed for the operation and where to purchase fireworks. He also researched the explosive potential of fireworks, their equivalence to other materials, and whether firearm bullet velocity could ignite the explosives.
McMahill acknowledged the use of AI technology in such incidents, highlighting how it can impact various aspects of life. He emphasized the need to share insights with law enforcement agencies across the country.
The Manifesto
Authorities discovered a six-page document described as a "manifesto" during the digital forensic analysis of Livelsberger's phone. The document contained mentions of political, social, and cultural issues, including criticism of the current administration.
McMahill refrained from interpreting the contents of the manifesto, emphasizing the importance of verifying information before releasing it to the public.
Tragic Outcome
Livelsberger, who was on leave from his base in Germany, tragically shot himself moments before the blast, which resulted in injuries to seven individuals. The FBI and ATF are assisting local investigators in examining the incident.
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has not yet commented on the use of its technology in planning such an attack.
