This robotic arm is creating traditional Chinese ink paintings
In 2018, Christie’s held its first auction for a work of art produced by artificial intelligence (AI), which sold for $432,500. Hong Kong-based cross-media artist Victor Wong believed that there was more to be explored in the realm of AI artistry. Wong, with his background in electrical engineering and experience in movie special effects, art tech installations, and sculpture, took on the challenge to create something truly unique.

The Birth of AI Gemini
His creation, AI Gemini, stands as a groundbreaking AI-driven robot specializing in the creation of traditional Chinese landscape paintings. Referred to as the “first-ever artificial intelligence ink artist in the world” by 3812 Gallery, which represents Wong, AI Gemini utilizes a re-programmed robotic arm with an attached paintbrush to bring Wong's vision to life on Xuan paper.
The robotic arm interprets data sets chosen by Wong to paint mountain contours and form breathtaking landscapes. Wong draws inspiration from diverse sources, including a lunar rover mission by China and fluctuations in stock prices, translating these data into stunning visual representations. The application of colors is based on deep learning principles and training in traditional ink landscape painting.

Each painting takes approximately eight to 10 hours to complete, with the final piece reaching one meter in height and width. Since its inception, AI Gemini has been showcased in exhibitions across Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei, and London, garnering both critical acclaim and commercial success.
The Intersection of Art and Technology
Wong's innovative approach to merging human creativity with technological capabilities aims to push the boundaries of artistic expression. By combining centuries-old traditions of ink landscape painting with cutting-edge AI algorithms, Wong seeks to create a new artistic narrative that resonates with modern audiences.

Embracing the Future of Art
Wong envisions a future where AI and art are inseparable, challenging viewers to reevaluate their perceptions of creativity and technological influence. Through AI Gemini, he continues to blur the lines between man and machine, inviting audiences to witness the progressive fusion of art and artificial intelligence.
