Binance CEO falsely accused of CCP ties through ChatGPT

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, revealed that someone used ChatGPT to falsely accuse its CEO, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), of ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This recent incident is different from Binance's previous accusations as it involved artificial intelligence as the primary source of rumors. Binance was eventually able to reproduce the conversation in question, and Binance's CSO, Patrick Hillman, shared the logs of the conversation on Twitter.

According to Fortune, an anonymous source spread fake news to various parties, including congressional offices, suggesting that CZ was part of a Chinese state youth group. Their requests cited a conversation from ChatGPT as evidence of his CCP connections. Hillman's ChatGPT log specifically claims that Zhao was a member of the Youth League Committee of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in the 1990s. That log also suggests that Zhao worked as a software developer for the CNPC.

However, Hillman could not find any evidence of the Forbes story nor the LinkedIn page ever existing. Zhao's actual LinkedIn profile does not show that he worked for the CNPC, nor does it include his employment history before 2001. It is noteworthy that Binance has previously been accused of similar accusations.

In September 2022, Zhao denied accusations that Binance executive Guangying Chen is an agent of the Chinese government. He also stated that Binance is not incorporated in China. Subsequently, on March 29, 2023, the Financial Times published an article that Binance hid its Chinese presence after it obtained internal Binance documents. Zhao denied those claims, but without providing any specific counterpoints.

It is evident that "bad actors" will misuse AI, as with any emerging technology, but Binance is using AI for its constructive purposes. Binance's mission is to increase global freedom and prosperity through crypto, and it has been achieving this mission by providing a platform for trading more than 100 cryptocurrencies.
