OpenAI shared more about how it cast ChatGPT's voices
As OpenAI gears up to introduce a new Voice Mode powered by GPT-4o for ChatGPT, the company took the opportunity to shed light on the casting process for the voices of Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, and Sky, which have become synonymous with ChatGPT.
Insights into Voice Mode
According to OpenAI, Voice Mode stands out as one of the most cherished features of ChatGPT. This high regard likely prompted the recent overhaul of the feature, especially following the integration of GPT-4o, which is now natively multimodal.
The Casting Process
The detailed casting process began around the start of 2023, with OpenAI collaborating with renowned casting directors and producers to establish specific criteria. These criteria were designed to ensure that each voice possessed a distinct personality and had universal appeal. Key attributes sought after included voices from actors with multilingual backgrounds or diverse origins, a timeless quality, trustworthy and natural-sounding voices, as well as warm, engaging, confident, and charismatic tones.
After issuing a call for talent, the casting team evaluated over 400 submissions. Prospective actors auditioned by recording themselves reading various ChatGPT responses, spanning topics from mindfulness and travel plans to everyday conversations.
From this pool, 14 finalists were shortlisted for further refinement before being presented to OpenAI.
The finalists engaged in discussions with OpenAI representatives to gain insights into the technology's capabilities, limitations, risks involved, and the protective measures in place.

OpenAI emphasized that none of the voices were chosen based on their resemblance to a celebrity's voice; rather, they are the natural speaking voices of the talented individuals. Additionally, the actors are compensated above standard market rates for as long as their voices are utilized in OpenAI's products.
