Apple CEO Tim Cook to donate $1 million to Donald Trump's Inaugural Fund
Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that he will be donating $1 million from his wealth to US President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund. This decision comes ahead of Trump's swearing-in ceremony on January 20, as reported by Axios.
Tim Cook's donation is part of several high-profile financial contributions to Donald Trump's inaugural committee. Other notable donors include Amazon, Open AI, Toyota Motor of North America, and crypto companies like Kraken, Ripple, and Ondo.
Tim Cook's Reason for Donation
According to the report, Tim Cook sees the presidential inauguration as a great American tradition and is donating to support the "spirit of unity." Despite Apple being the biggest US taxpayer, the company is not expected to make a corporate donation.
This move by Tim Cook follows Apple's recent agreement to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of using its virtual assistant, Siri, to eavesdrop on users. The lawsuit, which spanned over five years, alleged that Apple had been secretly recording conversations through Siri for more than a decade.
Apple's Stance on Privacy
Apple, led by CEO Tim Cook who considers privacy a "fundamental human right," has maintained its stance on protecting user privacy. The company, however, has not admitted any wrongdoing as part of the settlement agreement.
If approved by a California federal court, the settlement could potentially allow millions of Apple customers to file claims for compensation, amounting to up to $20 per affected device as per court documents. It is anticipated that only a small percentage of eligible consumers, around 3% to 5%, will actually file claims.
Other Donors to the Inaugural Fund
Aside from Tim Cook and Apple, other companies like Toyota Motor of North America, Ford Motor, General Motors, and Robinhood Markets have also made significant contributions to the inauguration fund. Additionally, individuals such as Dara Khosrowshahi of Uber Technologies and Ken Griffin of Citadel LLC hedge fund have pledged donations as well.
Amazon, apart from its donation, will also be livestreaming the inauguration event on its Prime Video OTT platform.
With various entities coming forward to support the inauguration, the event is shaping up to be a momentous occasion that underscores the importance of unity and national traditions.
