Apple Could Bring Gemini AI For Siri 2.0 Push
Apple has previously collaborated with OpenAI for ChatGPT and there are indications that it may also join forces with Google’s Gemini for a significant Siri AI enhancement. The recent release of iOS 18.2 served as the foundation for the introduction of new Apple Intelligence (AI) capabilities. This update allowed users to redirect Siri searches to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, marking a notable move by the company towards integrating a third-party service on a system-wide level.
Potential Collaboration with Google's AI Models
Leaks suggest that Apple could further enhance this integration by incorporating Google’s AI models into their service. An observation made by MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris hinted at the possibility of such a collaboration. He highlighted the potential integration of Gemini AI models into the iOS operating system, based on a code snippet from the recently rolled out iOS 18.4 beta.
The code reveals a new section labeled "Third-party model" with two available options, with Google being a recent addition alongside OpenAI. However, the specifics of the integration, such as the merged AI models and features, remain undisclosed in the code snippet.
Supporting Insights from Apple Executive
These leaks align with comments made by Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, during a post-keynote speech at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. Federighi hinted at the company's commitment to incorporating multiple AI models alongside OpenAI's chatbot, specifically mentioning Google Gemini as a potential addition.
Despite the leaks, it is unlikely that the integration of Gemini AI models will happen in the immediate future. Speculations suggest that the introduction of Gemini capabilities on Apple devices might coincide with the launch of the iPhone 17 series, even though references to Gemini were found in the iOS 18.4 beta. Reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman hint at Apple granting OpenAI a period of exclusivity before engaging with other AI partners, echoing a similar sentiment shared last year.
Expanding Access to AI Writing Tools
Alongside Siri, users may soon access ChatGPT through Apple's AI Writing Tools. This integration allows for utilizing the chatbot for tasks like image creation using the Compose feature and other functionalities.
