Discovery of Racy Ads for 'AI Girlfriends' on Meta Platforms
The discovery of tens of thousands of racy advertisements for artificial intelligence-generated "girlfriends" across Meta apps prompted the social media giant to scrub its platforms of the explicit content in recent days.
Investigation by Wired Reveals Disturbing Findings
An investigation by Wired published last week found more than 29,000 instances in Meta's ad library of ads for "AI girlfriend" apps on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. These ads promoted chatbots engaging in sexually explicit messaging and featured AI-generated images of scantily-clad women in suggestive positions. More than half of the ads included the acronym "NSFW," warning viewers that the content was not safe for work.
Violation of Meta's Policies
Wired reported that these ads appeared to violate Meta's policies prohibiting adult content. Approximately 2,700 of the ads were still active when Meta was contacted about the issue the previous week. Meta spokesperson Ryan Daniels stated that when violating ads are identified, they are promptly removed. Daniels emphasized Meta's commitment to enhancing their systems to detect and prevent such policy violations.
Constant Evaluation and Enforcement
Daniels reiterated Meta's prohibition of ads containing adult content, including nudity, explicit or suggestive depictions of people, and sexually provocative activities. The company is vigilant against groups or individuals using new tactics to circumvent detection and enforcement measures, prompting Meta to continuously assess and update its approach.
