Google strengthens AI-powered fraud detection and security efforts in India
Google recently unveiled its Safety Charter in India as part of its commitment to enhancing AI-powered fraud detection and addressing the growing prevalence of digital scams in the country. With India being a digital-first nation, incidents of fraud related to UPI transactions surged by 85% year-over-year, amounting to nearly $11 billion last year.
Addressing the Threat Landscape
In response to the escalating incidents of digital frauds, including scams involving impersonation of officials for financial gain, Google is stepping up its efforts to combat these threats through its new Safety Charter. Heather Adkins, Vice President of Engineering at Google Security, emphasized the need to adapt to the evolving threat landscape with machine-speed reactions.
Adkins outlined the three core pillars of Google's Safety Charter: safeguarding end users from online fraud, bolstering cybersecurity for governments and organizations, and developing AI in a responsible and ethical manner.
Protecting Users with Innovative Solutions
Google highlighted its initiatives to enhance security measures, such as issuing 41 million warnings through Google Pay against potentially fraudulent transactions. Additionally, Google Messages utilizes AI-powered Scam Detection to shield users from over 500 million suspicious messages monthly.
The company also introduced its Play Protect program in India, which successfully thwarted nearly 60 million attempts to install high-risk apps, preventing the deployment of over 220,000 malicious apps across millions of devices.
Harnessing the Power of AI
Adkins underscored the pivotal role of artificial intelligence in threat detection, citing the deployment of Gemini to rapidly identify and address potential risks. Google's advanced AI capabilities have significantly enhanced threat identification and response times.
Google's collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs' Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) aims to raise awareness about cybercrimes and strengthen cybersecurity measures. This partnership builds upon Google's existing initiatives, including the launch of DigiKavach, an online fraud identification program established to combat malicious financial apps and predatory loan schemes.
By leveraging AI technologies and strategic partnerships, Google continues to lead the charge in bolstering digital security and combating fraud in India.
