A Deep Dive into GenAI: Transforming Higher Education

Evolution of Learning: Assessing the Transformative Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) models, such as ChatGPT, have seen a surge in popularity in recent times. Despite their widespread adoption, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding how this emerging technology influences various stakeholders in higher education.

While there is existing research on the general opportunities and risks of AI in education, there remains a need for more specific insights tailored to different stakeholders such as students, educators, and institutions. This study aims to delve into the perspectives of students and educators separately, offering customized solutions for each group.

Research Methodology

This study utilizes a mixed-method approach, combining a detailed online questionnaire of 188 students with a scenario analysis to explore the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with GenAI. The results reveal that students leverage GenAI for tasks like assignment writing and exam preparation, considering it a valuable tool for academic success.

The scenario analysis provided further insights into potential future scenarios, shedding light on both the opportunities and challenges of integrating GenAI into higher education for both students and educators.

Implications and Recommendations

The primary goal of this study is to offer a clear understanding of the implications of GenAI for students and educators while providing actionable recommendations and solution strategies. The findings indicate that irresponsible and excessive use of AI technology could present significant challenges.

Educators are advised to establish clear policies, reassess learning objectives, enhance AI skills, update curricula, and reconsider examination methods to effectively navigate the integration of GenAI in education.
