7 AI Chatbot Alternatives to ChatGPT You Need to Try

If you’re looking for alternatives to ChatGPT, you’re in luck. Ever since OpenAI released it as a free preview, many competitors and copycats have come out to try and capture a piece of the AI market. Here are some of our favorite ChatGPT alternatives that we’ve tested:

1. Bing with ChatGPT

If you want to try a chatbot for the first time, Bing with ChatGPT might be a good option. Bing Chat operates similarly to ChatGPT, but it crawls through the internet to find the information it needs to respond to your prompts. It also cites its sources by default and can be changed in tone to be more creative, precise, or balanced. It even has a ton of integrations from your phone’s keyboard to the Windows 11 taskbar.

2. Google Bard

Google Bard is Google’s chatbot response to ChatGPT. It uses a combination of two language models, LaMDA and PaLM, which improves its math and logic capabilities. While its features are a bit more limited, it's regularly updating its features through "Experiment updates" and has even upgraded to write code. We compared Bing with ChatGPT versus Google Bard, and the results were surprisingly close.

3. You.com

You.com has had AI chatbot, YouChat, longer than Microsoft’s Bing. It introduced YouChat 2.0, which integrates You.com apps for sites such as Reddit and YouTube into its chatbot’s responses. However, the app integration is not fully there yet, so we would still recommend using Bing with ChatGPT.

4. Auto-GPT

Auto-GPT is similar to ChatGPT, but it's semi-autonomous. Instead of prompting the AI, you set the chatbot a goal, and it handles setting all the tasks, asking and answering follow-up prompts, etc. The catch? Auto-GPT relies on a Python environment to run, so it’s not a simple chatbot to use. However, you can try out Auto-GPT with AgentGPT, a free beta that already has the Python environment set up.

5. Hugging Face's StableLM

StableLM is an open source LLM that competes with OpenAI. It is trained on just 3 billion to 7 billion parameters compared to OpenAI’s 175 billion-parameter GPT-4 model and lacks the reinforcement training that consistently improves ChatGPT. However, it is still worth exploring, and you can try it out over at Hugging Face, an AI community site that has a free Alpha test of StableLM running that anyone can try.

6. Replika

If you're looking for a more conversational chatbot, Replika may be a viable alternative to ChatGPT. Unlike some of the other options, it aims to provide support as a mental health tool by mimicking human conversation. It can help you work through anxiety, depression, or just be a friendly ear to listen. While it may not be as accomplished in other areas, it certainly has its niche.

7. Cleverbot

Cleverbot was one of the earliest chatbots to roll out, and it's still around today, despite being largely overshadowed by newer models. It functions similarly to ChatGPT and Bing with ChatGPT and can provide a good conversation experience. However, it may not be quite as advanced as some of the other options on this list.

Ultimately, the right chatbot for you will depend on your needs. Each of these ChatGPT alternatives has its strengths and weaknesses, so be sure to try out a few until you find the one that works best for you.
