New Orleans attack: Meta glasses used
The tragic incident in New Orleans on New Year's Day, where 14 individuals lost their lives, has been linked to the use of Meta smart glasses by the perpetrator. The FBI revealed that the attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, had utilized his Meta glasses to record video footage of the French Quarter in preparation for the attack.
Insight into the incident
On October 31, Jabbar cycled through the French Quarter, capturing video using his Meta glasses as part of his planning process. Lyonel Myrthil, the special agent in charge of the FBI's New Orleans field office, disclosed these details. Although Jabbar had the glasses on during the attack, he did not activate them at that time.
Features of Meta glasses
Meta glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban, are equipped with a camera, speakers, and artificial intelligence capabilities. These smart glasses can be controlled through voice commands, buttons, and gestures. While certain functions require internet access or pairing with a mobile device, the glasses do not have a built-in display on the lens.
One of the key functionalities of the Meta glasses is their ability to capture images and videos, which can be shared on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Additionally, users can conduct audio and video calls, send messages, or enjoy music using the glasses.
The onboard camera enables Meta's AI assistant to interpret text in various languages, answer basic queries, and identify nearby landmarks. However, the glasses are currently unable to perform complex tasks such as making reservations or providing navigation assistance.
Furthermore, visual indicators on the glasses notify others when the camera is in use, ensuring transparency in recording activities. The LED privacy indicator remains illuminated during camera operations, and according to Meta, it cannot be disabled for discreet recording.
It's important to note that the glasses do not have a viewfinder for framing images or videos, and they prioritize a hands-free user experience.
